Student Enterprise Day

Monday 8 October 2007

Meath County Enterprise Board hosted a special Enterprise Day for students participating in the Student Enterprise Awards competition on Monday, 24th September in the Knightsbrook Hotel, Trim.

320 students and their teachers attended the event which ran from 10 am to 2 pm. Schools present were:

Ashbourne Community School, Boyne Community College, Trim, Colaiste Pobail, Rathcairn, Eureka, Kells, St. Fintina's, Longwood, St. Joseph's Mercy and St. Patrick's Classical School, Navan, St. Peter's College, Dunboyne and St. Oliver Post Primary, Oldcastle.

The aim of the day was to introduce students to the Student Enterprise Awards competition which is run by the County & City Enterprise Boards and also to give them the experience of listening to speaker's expert in the areas of "Marketing on a Shoestring" and "Motivation and Goal Setting". In addition, two entrepreneurs who themselves set up a student accommodation business whilst in school, "grabagaff.com", showed students how a schools enterprise can lead to a viable long term business.

Co. Meath had tremendous success at the national final of the competition which aims to give students a taste of the real business world through setting up and running their own business. At the final last May in Tullamore, two sets of students emerged with national titles. Those students were Seamus Crosbie and Colm Gore from St. Patrick's Classical School in Navan who won 1st prize in the Senior category with their project "Business Illustrated" and Nicole Maguire and Eire Mc Namee from St. Oliver Post Primary, Oldcastle who won second prize in the Intermediate category with their business "Yummy" at the national final. They also presented details of their businesses at the Enterprise Day and demonstrated to the others present how they got their enterprises up and running and made them a success.

The Enterprise Day M.C. was Ruth Scott, 2fm D.J. and two lucky students won a Philips 6GB iPod sponsored by the Meath CEB. They were Mary Buckley, St. Peter's College, Dunboyne and Christine Canavan, St. Joseph's Mercy, Navan.

The Meath County Enterprise Board is also offering schools the services of a consultant who will conduct workshops in the county's second-level schools in the areas of Idea Generation, Marketing and Communication Skills. Any teacher who is interested in availing of these should contact Caroline Lynch at the Meath CEB at 046-9078400.

The Meath County Enterprise Board endeavours to promote an enterprise culture in the county through the Student Enterprise Awards competition and is funded by the Irish Government and part funded by the European Union under the National Development Plan, 2007-2013.
